Katherine Atkinson is from the UK and recently graduated with a master’s degree in Conflict Studies. She lives in Brussels currently, but did her studies in London and has lived in France, Russia and Moldova while she studied French and Russian. She is particularly interested in the politics of the post-Soviet space.
Without a legal framework, states will be free to strengthen their technological capabilities and test the response of their adversaries all while knowing that their actions do not break international law.

In 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and involved itself in the secessionist wars of Donetsk and Luhansk, the consequent international sanctions from the European Union and America signaled an end to Russia’s positive diplomatic relations with the west. Now, almost three years later, these sanctions have failed to act as a deterrent for Putin to yield Russia’s control over the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine.

Despite the fact that the various reasons leading to radicalisation of men and women are cited as the same, the approaches to counter radicalisation do little but enforce gender stereotypes and disempower women. Instead, policies should consider the wider factors that lead to the social isolation of women such as racial hatred and gender-based discrimination resulting in community isolation.
